Remote Learning

For most students lessons will be taught and learned within the school building. However, if students are unable to physically attend school, but are still capable of completing work, then work will be provided for them to complete at home. 

If your son or daughter is in this situation please alert our Attendance Officer Mrs Norman (01553 828648 ext.217); she will then make this known to the appropriate staff. 

Resources will be provided through Google Classroom, so students should check the Classroom for each lesson they would have had on that day.  Please be aware that - if it is an unexpected absence - staff may not be able to upload work onto Google Classroom until the end of that school day.  In the interim students can spend their time:

  • Completing any outstanding classwork or homework tasks
  • Reading
  • Revising information from their knowledge organisers
  • Using online quiz or revision sites to test their skills and knowledge.

Additional Online Classroom Hubs and Useful Websites

There has been a National effort to support schools in providing resources for online learning.. 

We will continue to use Satchel:One (formerly Show My Homework)to set work but our teachers will be reviewing these new resources and making appropriate recommendations.

Useful websites 

to supplement Home Education provided by your current school;

Most are selected from the Government website designed to assist Home Education. (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-online-education-resources)

Seneca Learning -Good for both Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3, however some aspects of Key Stage 3 curriculum may not be appropriate (for example English text studied).  It is a useful site to test prior knowledge, with multiple choice or one word answers.

Pobble 365 -  a new image is published each day as a basis for creative writing. Story starters, questions and drawing ideas are provided.

Bowland Maths Resources -  downloadable assessments on a range of subjects, including sample answers and assessment tips, with content suitable for parents and students.  Be prepared to spark debate and some out of the box thinking.

Transum - a daily challenge covering a range of topics in a fun way.

BBC Bitesize -  good for both Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 with interactive resources, suitable for discussions and independent use across the curriculum.

Oak National Academy -  covering a range of subjects across the curriculum.  Use of videos and multiple choice quizzes.

Twinkl  currently free resources during school closures, covers the curriculum from foundation year to Key Stage 4 for a range of subjects. 

Duolingo  a good online language website, an APP can also be downloaded.  Best results when 5-20 minutes can be allocated to it daily.

PE with Joe Wicks -  a weekday 30 minute workout, if too difficult there are others available.  The UK Chief Medical Officer advises up to 60 minutes of exercise a day for young people.

The Day -  an online newspaper aimed at young adults, it has activities, discussion points and links to further articles surrounding each article. 

Keeping Active and Fit 

Looking after your mental and physical health during this challenging time is paramount. 

As well as  the tasks set for you by your subject teachers  it is important that you keep yourself busy and healthy.

Other activities you could do include:

  • Yoga/meditation
  • Walking/jogging (maintaining social distancing)
  • Keeping in touch with your friends and family through facetime or phone calls Cooking
  • Playing board games such as scrabble
  • Learning a new skill such as sewing or playing a musical instrument Learning life skills – helping around the house.

West Norfolk Carers

West Norfolk Carers are still here for telephone support. There are running Zoom online meetings for young carers and young adult carers and support on their Facebook groups.

Kooth is a safe, confidential and anonymous mental health and emotional well-being platform for children and young people, accessible through any connected device. Available free at the point of use, Kooth helps to reduce wait times for young people seeking help while removing the stigma associated with accessing help.

Internet Safety 

While using technology can provide hours of education and important social opportunities for children and young people during this period, it does need to be used in a safe way. Internet Safety Day (9th February 2021) is designed to remind all on how to use the internet safely. This is the theme of KS3 virtual assemblies this week, with a follow-up optional lockdown challenge on their year group Google Classrooms.

NSPCC Online Safety  Recognise it can be hard to know how to talk to your child about online safety. From setting up parental controls to advice on sexting, online games and video apps, they can help you to understand the risks and keep your child safe.
